March 2015 – The Baruch S. Blumberg Institute (www.blumberginstitute.org) has recruited a new team of nationally renowned scientists to focus exclusively on research to develop a cure for hepatitis B, a move that nearly triples its research capacity and has created the largest concentration of nonprofit scientists focusing solely on hepatitis B and liver cancer in the United States. Hepatitis B Foundation Welcomes Two New Board Members
Jan 26 – The HBF is proud to announce that Craig Esterly, engineer and business owner, and Wayne Yetter, pharmaceutical industry executive, have joined its Board of Directors. Both bring broad and deep experience in the healthcare arena, and are joining the Foundation at a time when we are rapidly expanding and accelerating our pace of research into finding a cure for hepatitis B. December 2014 - The Hepatitis B Foundation (HBF) has been awarded a competitive grant of $313, 000 from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation to implement a patient empowerment program for those living with chronic hepatitis B in Haimen City, China. The HBF will work with patients over the next two years to help them become actively involved in their disease management and provide training for rural doctors to assist their patients in understanding hepatitis B diagnosis, transmission, prevention and disease care and treatment.
October, 2014 – The Hepatitis B Foundation’s (HBF) High School Science Enrichment Program recently received an $8,500 donation from the Fulton Bank, N.A. This contribution was provided though the State’s “Educational Improvement Tax Credit” (EITC) program. The Pennsylvania EITC tax credit program allows businesses to receive tax credits for corporate state tax dollars they donate to educational programs such as the HBF’s Science Enrichment Program.
Aug. 4, 2014 – World Hepatitis Day is celebrated annually on July 28, which is the birthday of Dr. Baruch S. Blumberg who won the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the hepatitis B virus. In commemoration of this day, the Office of National Drug Control Policy and Office of National AIDS Policy sponsored a White House briefing to honor national and international efforts to address the “silent epidemic” of viral hepatitis.
Dr. Thomas Starzl Receives Hepatitis B Foundation’s Highest Scientific Honor
April 23, 2014 - The 2014 Crystal Ball Gala, hosted by the Hepatitis B Foundation, included an evening of dinner, dancing, a live and silent auction, and awards ceremony that attracted hundreds of supporters. Thomas E. Starzl, M.D., Ph.D., was awarded the Hepatitis B Foundation's 2014 Baruch S. Blumberg Prize, the highest scientific honor that the foundation confers. Read More...
Dr. Robert Gish Becomes Medical Director for Hepatitis B Foundation
Feb 10 - An internationally renowned medical researcher in the field of viral hepatitis, Dr. Gish has made invaluable contributions to the understanding and treatment of hepatitis B, which is the world’s leading cause of liver cancer. Hepatitis B Foundation and Hep B United Applaud USPSTF for Draft HBV Screening Recommendations
Feb. 10 - The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) issued a draft “B” grade for HBV screening of populations most vulnerable to HBV infection, which includes foreign-born individuals from countries with a 2% or higher HBV prevalence rate. A "B" grade recommendation ensures that healthcare providers will increase HBV screening in high-risk populations and that insurance carriers will reimburse for the testing! Read more.

HBF Executive Director Receives Prestigious Award
July 29 – HBF Executive Director Joan Block received the CDC "Hepatitis Champions" award in Washington DC for her advocacy success in adding HBV to a protected disability under the ADA law. Dr. John Ward, Director of CDC's Div of Viral Hepatitis presented the award at a special ceremony in commemoration of World Hepatitis Day on July 28. Read more.

The Natural Products Discovery Institute Announces Collaboration with the Ohio State University on Colon Cancer
The Natural Products Discovery Institute (NPDI) has signed its second collaborative agreement to provide access to the formerly private Merck Natural Products Collection that was received as a donation from the company this past summer.
